I had an interesting conversation with a “programming guru” who convenience me that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) isn’t really what it’s cracked up to be and a simple waste of time and money.

In order to comprehend this madness, I decided to go directly to the source, and find out why I have been wasting my precious time and life for the past 7 years focusing primarily on SEO marketing strategy.

According to the North America Internet Usage Stats, there are some 303,824,646 folks in the United States of which 218,302,574 are internet users. For those who can’t comprehend this number it works out to roughly 71.9% of the United States has access to the internet.

Now that’s a pretty hefty number – according to my new trusted source, the majority of the users probably use social networks to find what they are looking for in this world, not search engines… That being said all you folks at Google (who would name their company Google anyway?) and Yahoo had better start searching for a new job – search engines are old news. Maybe MySpace.com is hiring?

Let’s look at some figures to back my new friend’s hypothesis. Of those 218 Million internet users some 80% use search engines every single time they login to the internet or some 5.6 Billion monthly searches according to Nelsen NetRatings.

Now – let’s think outside the box. There are around “180 million folks” in the United States who use search engines every time they login to the internet. This has got to be false information – my excuse for this is they probably clicked on some pop up ad and happened to land on Google, Yahoo, MSN etc… right? I mean who uses search engines these days? You don’t hear people going “check me out on Google!” no, no; you hear them say “Hey, look me up on MySpace.com!”

It’s time for all of us SEO Guru’s to find new careers. I expect that the folks at the Googleplex start search for new jobs as MySpace.com and Facebook.com continue to take over planet earth.
